Fuel consumption measures how efficiently a vehicle uses fuel, a critical factor in operating costs and environmental impact. Different regions use different metrics—Americans prefer miles per gallon (higher is better), Europeans use liters per 100 kilometers (lower is better), while others use kilometers per liter. Fuel economy standards emerged as concerns about fuel costs and environmental impact grew. The US introduced Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards in 1975 after the oil crisis. Europe developed the NEDC (later WLTP) testing cycle. As vehicles became more efficient and electric vehicles emerged, new metrics like MPGe were created to enable fair comparisons.
Divide 235.215 by miles per gallon (US) to get liters per 100 kilometers.
Example: 235.215 ÷ 30 MPG = 7.84 L/100km
Divide 282.481 by miles per gallon (UK) to get liters per 100 kilometers.
Example: 282.481 ÷ 40 MPG = 7.06 L/100km
Divide 100 by kilometers per liter to get liters per 100 kilometers.
Example: 100 ÷ 15 km/L = 6.67 L/100km
Multiply US MPG by 1.201 to get UK MPG (because UK gallon is larger).
Example: 25 US MPG × 1.201 = 30 UK MPG
A modern compact car achieves about 35 miles per gallon (US).
